A sunrise represents the possibilities of a new day, a day not to be wasted but instead experienced. It's proof that we've been given another chance to explore, create, and embrace the beauty and wonder of the day that lies before us.
When I was drinking alcohol, I didn't appreciate sunrises; rather, I craved the darkness of the evenings until I felt it was an acceptable time to open a bottle of wine. Sitting in my living room with a full glass of Chianti on the table next to me was a better comfort than knowing the sun would rise the next morning.
When I stopped drinking, however, my outlook on mornings changed. They became a time to "get things done" rather than just "get by until evening." Teaching an early morning yoga class and running the trails in our local park before anyone else are two pastimes I look forward to doing, and now, instead of staying up late to finish that bottle of wine, I listen to my body and go to bed when I am tired. These days, I look forward to rising early, just as the sun makes its debut, with a whole lot more energy and intention for the day ahead.
